Ever since the pandemic started I have been working from home. I am very fortunate that the nature of my work allows me to do most if not all of my tasks from home, or anywhere in the world really. Hence while I am in México, I have also been working, through the power of the internet!
Working from “home” in México is very feasible, depending on where you are. México City is a huge beast and being the huge economic center that it is, it makes sense that the city and it’s residents are constantly connected to the internet via fiber optics. This is however not the case for México in general, as many homes are either completely without internet, or still using the old broadband connection. Which makes browsing today’s rich internet difficult and slow.
However, as I say, since I am located in México City, it's Carlos Slim’s fiber optic all the way back to Iceland, with the apartment's 5GHz WiFi pulling up to 50Mbps, a decent speed over all. Nota bene since this is a fiber connection with a "top" speed of 100 Mbps, although even higher speeds are offered. And that’s where the similarity with Iceland hit a bit too close to home I must say. The price for the internet here in México is...let's just say it's understandable why Carlos Slim is a billionaire. The price of a good internet connection with one of the biggest companies in México City, is basically the same as the price for a similar connection in Iceland. In a country where the median income is less than half of what it is in my country!
Aside from the price of the internet, and leaving aside the occasional outages when a heavy storm passes, or somebody decides to dig into the wires outside of the house, the availability of the internet is rather good, at least in some form or another, which allows for a more interconnected population, and a rather easy time working from home in México.
