My guess is that most people here in Mexico cook and shower with gas which, now that I think about it, might be much more common in the world than I had thought. Since electricity production and transfer is a tricky business here, with such a vast amount of people, and land to provide electricity for light, power, and other things, it’s no wonder that still, to this day, gas is a highly used product in the country, even here in Mexico City.
Every-time you step into the shower you hear the “boiler” kick in and start heating the water, which leads to a rather cozy shower but sometimes it seems to have difficulties with heating the water enough so, on cold mornings, your showers might be rather chilly. Something that is rather different from the geothermal heated water that most people enjoy in Iceland. Hopefully in the future Mexico can start using some of their own hydro- and geothermal energy sources, with even some Icelandic and Mexican organizations working together to make that a possibility.
Cooking also is done mostly with gas. I remember when I first came here to Mexico and saw that there were all gas hobs in all the kitchens that I went into. Something that I myself had never experienced before, since gas in Iceland is rather fancy to have in your kitchens, as gas is much more expensive than the conventional electric hob, or now the super-energy efficient induction hobs. So to me it was a luxury, which also happens to be the opposite effect here with electric hobs.
