Why don't you jump Geysir?

Geysir

Geysir watches Strokkur, passively and smokey. They keep their distances; one, stoic, the other, festive and loud. Geysir, who seems jealous of his neighbor's fame, looks forward to return to the wanderings from he was known in his past. His big jumps, his giant presence. Strokkur barely reaches fifteen meters. It is said that Geysir reached 170, but it was more usual to see him jumping till the 60 meters high.

If one approaches Geysir, at a prudent distance, for sure, Geysir likes to recount his misadventures. He was born between earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the Haukadalur valley. It is believed that 10,000 years ago that area had volcanic activity, although Geysir says that he is not quite sure, since his memory fails. Nature and in particular, earthquakes, have been the ones that have caused various changes in his structure.

Therefore, he has not always had the same activity, but who could have the energy to endure so many evils?

With the passing of the years and centuries, Geysir has seen humanity develop. Those creatures that, like me, visited him, have not always had the same intentions. As evidenced by the year 1935, when trying to dig an artificial canal through his vent, Geysir crammed itself with silica, leaving him quiet and motionless for several years. It was then when Geysir realized about human power. Those creatures that once were fascinated by him, visited him, came to tell him things, they who observed and venerated him, were becoming beings that could even cause the same damage to him as a frightful tremor. In the eighties the creatures discovered that they could force him to appear, to jump again, using soap. Geysir was stubborn, he thought his jump must be respected and preserved. And, in the nineties, perhaps from all the warnings of the environmentalists, or from someone who listened to his prayers, they finally left him alone.

With the passing of the years and centuries, Geysir has seen humanity develop. Those creatures that, like me, visited him, have not always had the same intentions.

Geysir was happy, jocular. He was not bothered by the growing visits or the disturbances they caused. Therefore, from time to time, he celebrated. He jumped, splashing all around. Be careful, you idiot tourist! Keep your distance! the expectants yelled at each other. Geysir was boiling, dripping, with his seventy meters high. But the locals forced him to erupt again. Now it was not only Geysir who carried discords, it was her, Mother Nature, who struck the Earth once again. “I want you to jump, jump high and do it with all your strength ! I want you to teach them what you are capable of. I created you to be feared, so they run away from you. And yet, they are now more intrepid. It seems that nothing stops them ... not even you. ” Geysir jumped, reached 120 meters high. This invited more and more visitors. The public was asking, with stones, for him to jump, to do it frequently and very high. So, little by little, Geysir realized that his attempts were already useless ...

And so, in 2003, Geysir got tired.

Strokkur jumps again, people cheer. Now, the fame that Geysir won over the years and centuries, is not longer his but from his remote partner, who is labeled on Instagram photos with Geysir's name. There are those who theorize about what happened to the Great Geysir, who assume that one day he will jump high again, as high as he once did. But they don't understand what turned him off. There are even suspicions that his cauldrons are somehow damaged and that he will never jump again, unless another earthquake arrives or something that energizes him again.

If you visit Geysir, keep your distance, leave your camera aside, listen to him and remember that his anger doesn’t answers a why, but a who.
