What do Yoko Ono and Christmas have in common? Probably almost nothing, except the topic I brought up to you today. I have to confess that ... I'm not a Christmas person (can't you tell by now?) And I got to the point of removing my eyelashes with tweezers, trying to think of what other Christmasy topic I could write about that I haven’t done before. Especially because of the current situation in which everything was canceled and we cannot be together to sing the carols of the red-nosed reindeer at the top of our lungs. It turns out that, looking in the December calendar for things that I can do outdoors (such as taking photos) I was pleasantly surprised that the Imagine Peace Tower is turned on today December 21st until December 31st.
10 days of peace and love ...
In 2007 Yoko Ono installed on the small island of Viðey, here in Iceland, a monument dedicated to John Lenon. Hence the name, as one of the many famous songs of the ex-Beatle, who would turn 67 the day the tower was inaugurated. Its base is made of 15 reflectors that project a light towards the sky, and which, according to Wikipedia data, can reach 4,000 meters in height. Every year, the tower is lit in memory of the musician, from the day of his birth (October 9th) to the day of his death (December 8th).
They also light it on Yoko Ono's birthday, as well as for the spring equinox and… if you have your calendar at hand, for the arrival of the Winter Solstice, which happens to be today. Which reminds me that Gluggagægir also arrived today. In theory it is not a Christmas theme, but it is a December affair, when we take into account that this tower of light needs perpetual darkness to make sense, or at least, to be able to enjoy it? Be that as it may, it gives us a reminder that, little by little, we will have more sunlight from tomorrow.
